The Feudal Lords take Control
The Spring and Autumn period is basically the feudal lords going "how much can we get away with?" and taking as much power as possible. The state alliances were toppling like dominoes.
This is the period in which the now separate states entered their teenage rebellious stage without Dad the good ruler looking over their shoulder. They succeeded in making every other state around them unhappy while making themselves "independent." They tried their hand at minor conquest, which made the other states, who were also in their teen rebel stages, react over-the-top, leading to the Warring States period.
However, they still had time to make themselves "unique." They made their own religious systems, mixing old systems and new. They also made their own calendar systems, as well as different script, music, and art styles. They went to extremes to be different.
...That sounds familiar.
This period lasted from the sacking of Chengzhou until ca. 481 B.C.E..
